The Los Angeles Jewish Wellness Initiative

Six months ago there was a webinar on Dr. Daniel Amen's website. Pastor Rick Warren from the Saddleback Church was talking about a program that Drs. Amen, Oz and Hyman put together to lead the congregation into a decade of wellness. Though not a member of the church, I attended the launch of œThe Daniel Plan and along with almost 7000 attendees, pledged to ourselves and to G-d to lead a more healthful life. What is the premise of this program? Good nutrition, movement, quit smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, decrease stress¦nothing we don't already know.

But why will it be…

Stretching and Kvetching… Putting the “oy” in Joy

Life is pretty weird/awesome/meshugana huh?

If you told me 8 years ago when I was back in NY working on Wall Street, that I would be spending my Sundays in LA at assisted living communities teaching how to stretch and complain, I would think you were Passover soup nuts (ahem, the worst and craziest kind of nuts).

But here I am for the last five years teaching Stretching and Kvetching, an exercise and entertainment class that works out the heart, mind, and laughter muscles as much as our legs, arms, and pinky toes.

The premise of the class was founded…

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Table Tennis Therapy Program

The Sport and Art Educational Foundation (SAEF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization currently dedicated to improving the health and wellness of those in the West Los Angeles Jewish community. With headquarters in the Westside Jewish community center, SAEF operates the Alzheimer's Table Tennis Therapy Program where instructors work with Alzheimer's patients along with patients with other forms of dementia, to improve their overall well-being through a carefully supervised games in table tennis. An article about our program was recently featured in the Jewish Journal: http://www.jewishjournal.com/50_Plus/article/pingpong_therapy_brings_net_gains_to_alzheimers_patients_20110125/ Our work at SAEF is based on a Japanese clinical study that has demonstrated table…

Fresh To Fruition

After our family volunteered (through the Federation) at our local Farmer's Market to have people buy extra produce to donate to SOVA - that got us thinking! Why not have donation stands at various Farmer's Markets where people can buy extras? Even the vendors could donate at the end of their day , thus you have a win-win situation for all!

Bibliyoga - Yoga with a Jewish Twist

Who said you can't learn Torah while wearing spandex? Where did Maimonides teach that we need to stay fit in order to know God? How can we fulfil King David's words and use our entire body for getting spiritually connected? Which ancient Rabbi performed holy handstands in the Temple?

Here in Los Angeles, more Jews attend yoga studios than synagogues. We can expend more effort trying to attract them back to traditional spaces or we can meet them where they are. We'll provide Jewish content for the yoga classes they attend and build community where they're at. We'll empower them…

Kosher Bubble Tea Store

I would like to set up a restaurant that always serves kosher buble teas like there are many Asian restaurants called Jay Dee Bakery that serve it.

Women’s Gym

There are thousands of families in the wider Jewish community that would love to better their health and lose weight but can not because either they can't afford gym membership or they dont exercise in mixed gyms and there are no local all women's gyms. My idea would be to have a gym with a pool and a line up of classes (yoga, pilates, aerobics, cardio...) that would have seperate men and women's hours. To ensure that all women can take advantage I would like to offer childcare as well.

Jewish Spa

We will provide Mikvah facility for man and woman which will be open every day until late at night. There will be a conciseness classes about water and there cleansing effect, and the importance of drinking clean alkalized water. In addition there will be a restaurant that will provide a menu of healthy vegan organic and kosher food, healthy juice bar, coconut water and durian fruit drinks.

Let My People RAW

FOOD is a major staple in Jewish culture and tradition. The dining table has always been the place where people would gather, socialize, share wisdom and build relationships.

LET MY PEOPLE RAW (TM) is a unique educational campaign which will be conducted by the KATHARSIS non-profit organization (http://www.the-katharsis.org), and will be focusing on educating the Jewish community in Los Angeles how to improve their health and well being by implementing more vegan living foods into their diet, just like it was in time of creation.

The health statistics of the Jewish population nationwide are not very promising. The National Jewish…

The Children’s Foundation.org

I started a foundation in order to help the younger children at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.  Considering I am only 14 myself, I want myself to have a bright future and if I can do that, why can't the sick children get a chance also.  That is why my goal is to bring the Jewish community together to strive to reach one goal.  That goal is to bring smiles to those suffering children's faces.
